It’s been a sweet year. Full of the absolutely, completely, unexpected. I wrote, I traveled, I worked, and looking back on all of it is leaving me amazed and truly grateful.

While I loved riding the Staten Island Ferry and catching views of the Statue of Liberty and that iconic NYC skyline, a proper visit to Liberty Island and Ellis Island were on the must do list this visit. I was grateful for a beautiful morning with plenty of blue skies and sunshine to take in this iconic piece of history.

If we find poetry in the service station and the motel, if we are drawn to the airport or the train carriage, it is perhaps because, despite their architectural compromises and discomforts, despite their garish and harsh lighting, we implicitly feel that these isolated places offer us a material setting for an alternative to the selfish ease, the habits of confinement of the ordinary, rooted world.
