Through the Lens: Almudena Cathedral

After heading to tour the Palacio Real de Madrid only to find that it was being used as a palace and no tours were running, we wandered into the cathedral next door.

Certainly one of the newer cathedrals in Europe, with construction only being completed in 1993. But I think this place is worth the visit if only for the ceiling alone. Colorful and vivid and detailed. I just wanted to lay on a pew and take it all in, while simultaneously enjoying the air conditioning, let’s be real.

What a happy accident that I got to see this place! Put this one in the books as one of many reasons to enjoy the unexpected and go without a plan. But, and maybe more importantly, to be okay when the plan get’s a wrinkle. What wasn’t a plan at the beginning of the day, ended up being one of the highlights of my trip.
