On the very far East end of Atlantic Beach, there is a fort. Built to protect America from the British, however never really used for that purpose. Fort Macon saw the most action during the Civil War.
Now the many various rooms of the fort are empty, and serve as a nice cool place to visit on a hot summer day. A few rooms are set up as they would have been when the fort was in use, while others have been turned into small theaters. Each one tells visitors about a different era of Fort Macon history.
